Sophomore Update: Engineering Community
by Alysha Alling
Sophomores have transitioned from their last expedition, When Worlds Collide, to a more physics and math based expedition, Engineering Community. They began work on it with a grade challenge in crew to design and build a roller coaster. Students had to make a theme and write about the roller coaster and how it worked. They used foam pipes and string and the materials and objects around them. In the end, Burke Crew won. They had attached the foam pipes to the walls to slow the marble.
After coming back from intensives, sophomores were sent downtown for field work to truly kick off Engineering Community. They got to meet with expert architects, engineers, and builders. The tenth grade also heard from Superintendent Caulk. They learned how to make buildings more sustainable and less harmful to the environment. The tenth graders learned about solar power and how you can completely stop using fossil fuels if you make the switch. In this expedition the tenth graders will be focusing on sustainable heating, and how to build something to be useful and environmentally friendly. They will then be asked to design a chicken coop, using what they have learned.
Tenth graders are also about to start reading and acting out Shakespeare. They will be sorted into groups and asked to perform a scene to show their understanding of Shakespeare. They will have to memorize their scene and divide up parts. The tenth graders will then perform this in front of a panel and peers.
