Headline News

Congrats to the Portland Pirates intensive for raising nearly $2000 to support our classroom furnishing needs. Congrats to Nate R, Kassim, Carlee and Maeve for being our top ticket sellers. Thanks to everyone who supported the cause.

Progress report grades are now viewable online and available from crew advisors. Students with “2’s” in grades 9-11 may be required to stay for BK 7 this week. See relevant teachers for details. Do what it takes to be meeting standards.

Come see the CBHS winter play, the smash comedy, Almost, Maine by John Cariani: THIS Friday January 30 at 6:00, Saturday January 31 at 2:00 and 7:00 PATHS Dance Studio, 196 Allen Ave. 3rd floor: Admission $3 students/$5 adults.

This Wednesday is an 11:05 dismissal day for staff development.

We are beginning the sign-up process for Winter Conferences: 2/11 (4 to 8pm) and 2/12 (2:30-5:30). Please connect with your child’s crew advisor to confirm a time.

Reminder Senior Families: Contact Stephanie Doyle if you would like help with the FAFSA (874-8160, doyles@portlandschools.org). The FAFSA should be completed by the end of January. We apologize to those who were inconvenienced yesterday by the cancellation of the PATHS FAFSA event.

CBHS will now be offering a hot breakfast 3 times a week! Monday (Pancakes & a fruit),

Wednesday (Breakfast Sandwich) and Friday (French Toast).

Costs: Free and Reduced Lunch – Free; All others: $2.80

Today (Monday) in Crew: Students are asked to complete the annual district student survey. Thanks in advance for your input. Find the link to the survey on the school homepage. The sign-up process for Winter Conferences (2/11 and 2/12) should begin this week.

Monday TST – 10th Grade Meets in the Great Space.

MODEL UN: It’s time to gear up for Model UN. Students interested in attending the Model UN conference in May need to meet regularly on Mondays after school. First meeting is today – There will be a fun activity planned and we will meet our Global Educator. Meeting is in Bernstein’s room. Please contact Ethan Pierce, Josie Pierce, Saffron Mello, Marta Haydm, Maggie Ruff, or Izzy Baker-Pitre with any questions.

Ambassadors Needed for Visitors This Week: We have two outside evaluators observing school over the next few days. Ambassadors are needed for a focus group with these folks during Acad tomorrow. We will also have some educators (about a dozen) visiting on Friday, hoping to learn more about what you are up to, and we will need some ambassadors to meet with them during crew. Please see Mr. Pierce if you are interested in either opportunity.

Feeling stressed? Come to Block 0 meditation! Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays before school in the dance studio! No commitment necessary, come to be calm! 7:30 to 7:50. See Mr. Murray FMI.

Come to Café Night this Wed from 6 – 8:30! There are many performers on the docket, and food will be for sale. Tickets are $3 in advance and $5 at the door. And, if you want to see two junior crooners perform the Sinatra classic “Come Fly With Me” donate some money – their crooning begins when $50 has been donated. Bring your friends!

PROCLAMATION: Thursday, January 29th is World Language Assessment Day at CBHS. Check in with your language teacher for more information! There will be breakfast treats for students taking the ACCESS test before school on Thursday in the Great Space.

If you love your cellphone, please consider participating in Liam Fowler’s Senior Expedition about cellphone addiction. He is looking for 20 + participants from any grade. Let your crew leader know if you are interested by Friday the 30th at the latest. If you have any questions, see Liam. Note: Crew leaders, please take the names of all students interested and give the list to Liam at your convenience (email: Lfowlercbhs@gmail.com). Thank you.

Help Molly Daley out with her senior expedition! My topic (broadly stated) is body image and eating disorder awareness. I need volunteers of all genders, ages, and grades to take part in a photo gallery/exhibit. Just bring your lovely face and an idea of how you would finish this sentence: ‘I am beautiful because…’ However, your fill-in-the-blank may NOT be about physical appearance. Cabinet has decided that Spirit Week will take place over two weeks, so the juniors can participate. Next week will culminate in the seniors’ spirit week dance. The following week will culminate in Winter Carnival. Winter Carnival competitions will again be in buddy crew teams (9&12 and 10&11). So next week will be dress up days for one set of teams – Grades 10 and 11 – and the following week will be dress up days for the other set of teams – Grades 9 and 12. The prompts will be the same for both weeks:

Any student who is interested in joining the Technology Task Force should see Mr. Shibles or Ms. Natarajan with questions This group is going to be looking how to improve the use of technology across CBHS and suggest ideas for iPad implementation next year.

9-12 Student Pulse Team: This new ongoing student team will meet monthly with a professional facilitator (3 more times during Acad) to provide input about how the year is going: what’s working, what’s not and suggestions for improvement. Each crew should have one representative. Advisors: sign up your crew rep on the google doc, “Student Pulse Team.” Next meeting: Feb 24th

The faculty leadership team recently passed some new rules about posting materials around the school.

For educational flyers

The flyers should:

1) first be screened by the relevant teacher for appropriate content.

2) include student name FMI

3) cite relevant sources as appropriate

4) use school resources sensibly and sustainably

5) have a plan for location and duration approved by the Principal

For Event Flyers

The flyers should

UNUM has donated a block of free tickets to CBHS students for the Maine Red Claws Game at 5pm on Sunday, February 8th. Any student who was on HOW Honor Roll in the first trimester is eligible for up to 4 tickets to the game. Sign up outside Mr. Pierce’s office. First-come, first served.

Reminder: Students who are interested in joining the Vocal Ensemble or House Band for the 2nd semester: Now is the time! The Vocal Ensemble and House Band meet in the mornings before school with Ms. Stubbs in the PATHS music room (7am to 7:40am). Ms. Stubbs knows some students busses arrive later, but come as soon as you can. The vocal ensemble meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The House Band meets Wednesdays and Fridays at the same time. Arts credits can be earned. See Mr. Pierce or Ms. Stubbs FMI.
